Bára Sigfúsdóttir - On the other side of a sand dune

maa 21/01/2013 - 09:00 > 22:00

On the other side of a sand dune is a solo inspired by memories of Icelandic women who have lived through an incredible evolution of lifestyle and culture in the past century. If we look back in Icelandic history only one hundred years, or even less, the differences to be found in people’s living conditions and ways of thinking are astonishing. Whereas today we are overwhelmed by choice, the older generation of Icelanders remember a vastly different life- narrower, more isolated, yet in some ways richer.

Inspired by interviews I conducted with a few Icelandic women, I am working on constructing a fantasy composed of real events that took place from more than 70 years ago until the present. I aim to create a world of a girl/woman where the desires, ideas and sensations of lost times can be used to reflect upon our lives today. Dance, voice and lighting intertwine, and memories both collective and personal help me to shine an investigative light on the ingredients of our modern selves.

In creating movement material I search for emotional impact, through body language and a very personal physicality. I work a lot from improvisations, to define certain physical qualities and implicit intentions, which I then build upon to develop material. I place an emphasis on working with the rhythm and resonance of movements in various parts of the body. The inherent silences in movements (as well as in music) interest me greatly- I treat them as a crucial element in shaping the experience of an audience. When the timing is accurate, I am always amazed to discover to what extent an audience can be transported in the theater. I search for poetry in my actions and would like to offer the audience a thread- to follow, but equally to build upon using their own imaginations. I enjoy weaving humor together with moments of gravity, and in this way hope to trigger people to reflect on their own lives and experiences.
