Emilie Gallier - Twists (in the body of the big spectator)

maa 17/06/2013 > zon 30/06/2013

When entering the theatre, a body of audience forms itself and begins to breathe.Twists is about this body, its skin, movements of expansion and retraction, its voice, and the multiplicity of individuals forming it.
How is the multiplicity of spectators at play during the event of performance? Can this multiplicity generate movements of relation, and mutations of the body of the audience?
Twists acknowledges existing differences of knowledge between spectators, and render them operative for exchanges.
This work positions theatre — precious time off from habitual flows — as the place where spectators gather, think, experience and act, outside of what they might already know.

The differences of knowledge that the performance composes with, is approached through degrees of implication of spectators.
A complete performance of Twists takes place when expert readers/spectators and very implicated readers/spectators come together with implicated readers/spectators and new readers/spectators in the theatre. They penetrate a sound installation that connects them and allow the formation of the body of the Big Spectator.
The sounds produced by spectators coming in, activate the dance of the experts. Sounds are recorded in a sequence, filtered and re-transmitted in a later sequence. The recognizable system reiterates and gives space for spectators to contemplate, observe, change perspective, learn, and play in a more or less visible way. During the piece, the body of the Big Spectator takes many breathe, and learns how to speak, progressively starts articulating a song. Iterations allow changes (Twists) in the body of the Big Spectator.

Twists aims to change norms of relation, to twist the obsolete dichotomy audience/artists and the principle of participation, to reinstall continuity in the reception of the spectator.
