What have you seen in Sarajevo?

Sarajevo is an installation by choreographer Etienne Guilloteau made in collaboration with visual artist David Bergé exploring the intersection between the body and the notion of photography. Taking as starting point the phisicality of the void on which one day the Sarajevo museum for contemporary art may be constructed, the work is an attempt to provide access to the remains of a disappeared presence.

We, choreographer Etienne Guilloteau and visual artist David Bergé are currently preparing an installation in which we want to explore the intersection between the body and the notion of photography. This project is an attempt to provide access to the remains of a disappeared presence. There will be a performance moment within the duration of the installation, either at the opening or closing day.
Over a duration of time, a variety of elements will be added to a space in which the audience member will be invited to construct her/his own experience.

During the 1992-1995 Bosnian war a group of Sarajevo artists called on their colleagues around the world to help collect pieces for a future Sarajevo contemporary art museum. Now, almost 20 years later, all these works are in storage rooms and the actual site is vacant (except for some remains of a Dan Graham pavilion). Renzo Piano has given his architectural skills for free for the building of the museum that would house the impressive collection of 160 works by internationally-renowned artists including pieces by Jannis Kounellis and Michelangelo Pistoletto.

We are not interested in politics and corruption that form the base of this site between the Miljacka river and the US embassy, but rather in the physicality of this void, which we want to take as a starting point.

We will determine a score to organize our materials and actions inspired by John Cage’s Ryoanji Drawing Project, in which he used chance operation to determine how to do the drawings and therefore withdrew the desire of the artist to make a hierarchy in the material. We will use similar strategies in order to construct a qualitative experience in a gallery, based upon a composition with varied temporalities between memory, photographic image and (life presence).
