Aurelie Di Marino - If there weren’t any blacks you’d have to invent them

Six performers put the 1968 screenplay by Johnny Speight “If there weren’t any blacks you’d have to invent them” on stage. By staging this seemingly outdated movie, they question an important paradox today: the conscious complicity of the members of society to systemic violence which is openly ignored and dis¬placed, and which creates a lingering subconscious feeling of guilt at an individual level. The performance plays with the paradox between the acknowledgement of the injustice of power structures and the fact that one uses those same power structures to consolidate its own personal position.
